Reflection
With Jesus as our confidence, we have nothing to fear. The Lord has command over all things and promises to keep us from being taken out of His hand.

My Prayer: Lord, I thank you for Your love that keeps me securely in Your hands! Help me to depend on You when evil comes to tempt me. Thank You that I have nothing to fear, for You are always with me.

Sinking Fear

Matthew 14:28-31 NIV: "Lord, if it´s you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

Peter had left the boat, and walked toward Jesus. But Peter was afraid and began to sink. Jesus asked him, "why did you doubt?" It´s interesting that Peter´s first step was much more like a leap. His eyes fixed on Christ and without hesitation, he got out of the boat. What if He would have taken it more slowly-placing only one leg outside the boat-testing the waters before going further? What if he would have climbed out but kept a tight grip on the boat with his hands? Had he acted as such, his movement towards Christ´s direction would have been over before it had even begun. What kind of faith does Christ desire from us? Do we leave the boat, or hold tightly to it? The path of faith extends beyond our first steps, and rests only when we come face to face with Jesus. Anything less is sinking fear.

Seeking God

If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Do you really want God to hear your prayers? Would you like to know how to get God to listen to you? Read today's verse and notice what God Himself is telling His people to do to get His attention. The children of Israel had turned from God. They practiced idolatry of all kinds, worshipping other gods, disobeying God's laws and living their lives according their own desires. Regardless of the depths of their sin and wickedness, the Lord showed them mercy. God wanted to give them a chance for redemption but the people needed to come back to Him.

The Lord clearly tells the Israelites what to d humble themselves, pray, seek, and turn. In return, the Lord says that He will hear, forgive, and heal. Right here, in this one verse, we receive a message from the Lord that is just as relevant today in our lives as it was back then. First of all, we are told to humble ourselves. If you notice the order, humility comes before prayer. God wants us to come to Him in submission, in lowliness and brokenness, recognizing our desperate need for His saving grace. Then, we pray. We pour out our hearts to the Lord, asking, seeking and knocking for His response. In prayer, we must seek not only answers, but we must seek His face. To seek God's face demonstrates our love for Him, our desire to know Him, and our relentless pursuit of His attention. We need more than just words; we need intimacy and fellowship with Jesus. Finally, our prayers must include confession and repentance of our sins. Again, not just in words asking forgiveness, but in a true desire to change. To change means that we are willing to turn from our "wicked ways" and start following the Lord's ways by obeying His Word.

Regardless of where you are today in your relationship with the Lord, be assured of one thing: He wants more of you. If you feel distant from God, He wants you to know He is not distant from you. If you feel close to God, He wants to be even closer to you. If you humble yourself before Him, pray and seek His face, and are willing to turn from your sins, then He promises to hear, forgive and heal you. Just ask Him. Humble yourself before the Lord today and open your heart to Him. Be sincere, honest and vulnerable before Him. If you come to the Lord in this manner, you will definitely have His attention, and your heart will be ready to receive His answers.

Luke 15:20 NLT

"So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him."

Jesus taught the parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32. This young man made many wrong choices, but ultimately he accepted responsibility for the consequences of those choices.

Deciding to set out on his own, he had asked his father for his inheritance and off he went. He proceeded to make more bad choices, squandering his money on wild living. Eventually the money was gone and he fell to the position of feeding another man's livestock. He was so hungry that even the food he was feeding the pigs looked good. He thought of home—even his father's servants would be eating better than this.

I think I'll return home and become one of my father's servants, he thought. I don't deserve more than that, but I believe he'll hire me. Good choices. To admit his error and not try to blame anyone else. To face up to responsibility.

The young man's father saw him coming home. He ran out to meet him with open arms, killed the fatted calf and had a huge party to celebrate his son's homecoming.

Prayer

Father, I've made so many mistakes. I know many of the things I have done have not pleased you, but I thank you for this assurance of your love. Please forgive me and take me into your loving arms. In Jesus' name

Psalm 121:4

Take heart O believer in the Lord your God who never slumbers and never rests! Always will He hear you and always does His eye watch over your steps. Naught will take Him by surprise and nothing occurs outside His knowing. He knows intimately the desires of your heart and the difficulties of your life. Trust Him to seek the best for you and praise His name for His goodness!

Romans 8:26

Last Days

2 Timothy 3:1-5

"But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God--- having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them."

These verses give us a concise but graphic overview of powerful and evil attitudes driving this world toward the brink of annihilation. We have all been victims to some degree of these ungodly attitudes. We cannot escape being affected by them, and even after conversion, it is difficult to fend them off. This overriding way of life has an invasive way of forcing one to concentrate attention on self-satisfaction. It leads one to believe that life, government, employer, or society owes him a living. A strong sense of obligation to serve others, especially freely given service, and loyalty are major victims of its onslaught because it produces the attitude that one is owed rather than that one owes.

Notice how many of the descriptors given in these verses directly relate to focusing on the self. Self-satisfaction is the foundation, the launching pad, and driving force that motivates sin. It is sin's very essence. We should not be deceived into thinking that God does not want us to have any satisfaction in life, but we should rather understand that human nature, aided by Satan, easily allows conduct to get out of control and finds satisfaction beyond the bounds of righteous standards. God wants satisfaction to be produced differently in us.

God recognized us. Often times we do not see any sign of God answering our petitions, yet He hears our cries and deals with them specifically in His own way. Though we might not be constantly thinking of God, we are always in His thoughts as He hears our requests for help.

Don't Run From Trials

Everyone faces many trials; however, these trials are not in vain. God uses them to do a work in us, developing us into mature Christians.

In James 1:2-4, we are told, Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. In other words, God uses the tough times in life to sharpen us, making us mature and complete Christians.

Furthermore, God will not permit you to remain in the same trials all of your life; in His proper timing He will deliver you. Psalm 34:17 says, The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.

So don't run from your trials, because the testing of your faith develops you into a mature and complete Christian.

God's Unfailing Promises

I cannot imagine how excited the Jews were when they heard that the redeemer, the savior was finally here on earth. After all, they had been waiting their whole lives for this moment, waiting for the almighty Son of God to come and free them from their captors.

I also cannot imagine the confusion, when 30 years later this almighty king remained "powerless" against the ruling government, and instead of leading a rebellion, taught peace and co-existence (Luke 20:25). Instead of praising the pharisees, and appointing them to high positions in His kingdom, He condemned their actions (Matthew 3:7), and taught what real love was... sacrifice (John 15:13).

And finally, I cannot imagine the disappointment, when this almighty King died at the hands of the very kingdoms He was to rule over. It seemed that after all the promises God had made to the Jewish people, that none of them would be coming true. Then all of a sudden, 3 days later, the king that they had killed was back! (Acts 10:40)

I think that we can learn a very valuable lesson from the Jews of Jesus' time. The first is that we often look at the promises of God, and ask ourselves how we would fulfill them... then we expect God to act the same way, and often in a way that ends up praising us and not Him (just as the pharisees). Even more often, when these promises are not fulfilled the way we expect, we often start to question God, asking if He really cares about us, or even if He is capable of keeping His promises. Just like the Jews of Jesus' time, we end up disappointed and discouraged, before God has finished showing us His plan (Jeremiah 29:11).

I remember a time like this in my life, where after I became depressed I wondered why God was letting me feel this way. I remember my own pride interferring as I removed myself from Him more and more, until I thought I was completely isolated. I remember wondering what was going to happen, and doubting that I would ever get over my depression... I guess like many of the Jews of Jesus' time, I started to give up hope. But that's when the fireworks started, when God showered blessing after blessing on me. And now, the pain and suffering I felt before, is nothing more than a memory of how faithful God is, and that He does keep His promises (Hebrews 10:23).

Instead of fulfilling the prophecies and expectations of the Jews of Jesus' time, God instead freed them from a much bigger captor, their sin. Instead of giving them a wonderful life on earth for a short time, He gave them the gift of eternal life through His Son Jesus (John 3:16). And instead of saving a few, God gave His Son to save the world (Colossians 3:11).

We have an amazing God, one who not only keeps His promises, but has greater plans than we can even imagine. A God who doesn't do things our way, but will do them the right way (1 Corinthians 13:12). A God who, no matter the situation, you can rely on to get you through. Just like the Jews of Jesus' time, we may not always understand what is going on, or why God seems to be "failing" in keeping His promises, but we can know that in the end, He will not only keep His promise, but amaze us in how He did it (Romans 8:28). After all, this was how I met my fiancee... by God working in a different way than I expected.

One of the biggest causes of stress in our lives is the pressure we put on ourselves for daily provision. We work hard to provide for the necessities of life and can be anxious about our future. Will there be a recession? Will I still have a job? What about the mortgage? All of these questions are valid, but Jesus tells us that we don't have to worry about all these things, because our Father in heaven knows what we need and wants to provide for us.

All we have to do is become like little children, seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness trusting that Father will care for us as He promised. My children have never worried about the mortgage. As teenagers, they are only now beginning to understand the dynamics of our household budget. They have trusted that there will always be food on the table, a bed to sleep in, and clothes to wear. They have confidence that their parents will provide all of their needs and more.

They do not need to carry these kind of responsibilities on their shoulders because that is their parents' job. God wants us to become very little, so He can be very big in our lives. We don't have to worry and strive about what we are going to eat, what we are going to wear, and where we are going to sleep. We have a Heavenly Father who has promised to look after all the details of our life. If He cares for the sparrows, who neither sow or reap or store into barns, how much more will He look after His own children!

PRAYER

Father forgive me for worrying about my life. I confess that I have been anxious about many things. I know that You promised to provide everything I need because You are my Father. Help me to trust You with today's provision and leave tomorrow's needs in Your care. I want to seek You first today. I want to spend my time in relationship with You, trusting that all I need will be provided at the right time by my loving Heavenly Father. In the name of Your beloved Son Jesus, I pray, AMEN

Whether oppressed, hungry, or a imprisoned, God will take care of His child. If it oppression that we are suffering, then we will be upheld by God. If we are plagued with hunger, then God will provide spiritual food for our souls. If we are bound, then we will be liberated from our sins. There Is Nothing To Fear!

God knows you. Even if you don't know him, he knows everything about you. He knows how you were made, why you were made, and why you do the things you do. He created you and fashioned you in His extravagant love for His eternal purposes. If a car mechanic can recite in great detail, the purpose of every part in a re-built engine, how much more is the Creator of the heavens and the earth able to recite every characteristic of His beloved children.

He knows every bump, every bruise, and every failure. He knows every fear, every inadequacy, and every one of our dreams. He knows us through and through, yet He still loves us unconditionally. The thought of such intimacy with God causes many of us to cringe in fear. How could God know me as I really am, yet still love me? Shame caused Adam and Eve to run from the presence of their all knowing, all seeing Father. But God does not want us to run from Him, but rather run to Him.

Even when we do hide, we can't escape His loving gaze. Yes our Father knows us intimately and He loves us with an everlasting love. His love for us is higher, and deeper and wider than any other love we have ever experienced in our entire lives. The love that we are familiar with is usually conditional and based upon performance. But thanks be to God, that Father's love is not an earthly love, it is divine in nature and not based upon our own sense of personal goodness, but rather on His goodness and mercy. Yes your Father knows you, and He loves you with all His heart.

PRAYER
Father, You know everything about me. You see all my bumps and bruises, yet you love me unconditionally. I pray that I will not run and hide from you today, but rather run towards you. I thank You that Jesus paid the price for all my inadequacies, so that I might come to you with complete confidence. I thank You, that even though You know me, You still love me as your little child. Help me to walk in your extravagant, unconditional love today In the name of your beloved Son, Jesus I pray, Amen.

In the darkness leading to the Cross, Jesus gives us a vision of what will be in our future. Jesus gives us a wonderful vision. Jesus, in all His wonderful ways, gave us a gift while His earthly life was about to be taken from Him. The vision of Jesus coming back to earth on the clouds of heaven gives all of us hope. Perhaps tomorrow will be the day. Perhaps next week will be the time we see Him. No person now living on earth may get to see Christ return. However, we will get to see Christ return whether we are alive upon the earth or with Him in heaven. The glorious day of His return is a day when we will all shout for joy.

The parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25 is one of the most enigmatic and intriguing in all of scripture. It seems to be a story of great drama and romance. In it we also see a warning, and some information for the saints of great prophetic significance, It is also a wooing, and a calling into a devotion in God. Seeing And Believing

John 20:28-29 NIV: Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Do we, like Thomas, require some sort of visual affirmation to assure us that what God says is true? Or do we believe that God is faithful without requiring any sign or wonder? Have we seen that "what he had promised, he was able also to perform" (Rom.4:21), and therefore because we believe, we are able to see? As we seek Him in the Spirit, we require no proof that God is who He is, or that He will fulfill His Word to us. God is substantiated within Himself and need not present himself in the fire, thunder and lightening in order that we might believe. The world says that, "seeing is believing, but as we place our faith in Jesus, it is believing that leads to truly seeing-and not the reverse.

Love is the visible attribute of an invisible God.

1 John 4:12 says, No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. In other words, even though no person has ever actually seen God the Father, we are able to see God's character as we love one another.

Remember that God is love (1 John 4:8); so, when we walk in love, we are like God.

Thus, although we can't actually see God, we can see his character in our love for each other (and in his love for us). Indeed, Romans 5:8 tells us that God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Furthermore, Jesus said that we, his disciples, will be known by our fruit: By their fruit you will recognize them (Matthew 7:16, 20). Galatians 5:22 tells us what that fruit is: The fruit of the Spirit is love ... . Thus, we are known by our love—love for one another and love for God.

It is so important to walk in love, because love is the visible attribute of an invisible God.

David Confessing the Lord as His Strength

Living by grace involves depending upon God to work in our lives. For the greater part of his life, David was an outstanding Old Testament example of such living. This was certainly evident in the way David frequently confessed the Lord as his strength.

Everyone in this fallen world needs strength just to deal with the daily responsibilities and challenges of life. When you add the calling and desire of believers to please and honor God, much strength is needed day by day. David confessed the Lord as his strength for living. "The LORD is the strength of my life." How wonderful to know that the Lord is with us to impart His strength in us for every aspect of our lives, whether home, or work, or ministry, or whatever.

O Lord, my strength, I need Your strength for daily responsibilities, strength for staying on track with You, strength for periodic battles, strength for weaknesses within, strength to please You. You are my strength; I trust in You!

The Promise of Freedom in Christ

When people come in humility to the Lord Jesus Christ and trust in Him for freedom, they will be genuinely liberated. This is what the saving grace of God is all about. In coming to the Lord for His salvation, a person is delivered, rescued, set free. This gracious freedom that we find in Christ has both a "from" and an "unto" aspect. Those who look to Jesus for spiritual liberation are free to leave old things behind. They are also free to enter into corresponding new things.

Dear Lord Jesus, You are the one who has truly set me free. I thank You that I am no longer spiritually dead, condemned, headed for hell, and limited to inadequate human resources. The Thrill of Victory

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith. 1 John 5:4

Did you know that this word "victory" is used only six times in the New Testament? The Greek word for victory is "nike" and it means "a conquest" or "means of success." For many of us, the word Nike refers to the mega-sporting enterprise that sells shoes and clothing. Victory has been skewed by society standards to now mean something of extraordinary achievements. But Jesus would come and tell us to just have faith, for through faith we will be victorious.

How many of us as Christians today have victory in our lives? How awesome to experience the thrill of victory! But far too often we face the agony of defeat. Jesus did not come to earth, give His life, and leave us His Holy Spirit, just so we could enter heaven. Yes, He came to give us eternal life if we believe in Him, but He wants us to experience heaven on earth—today. Heaven on earth in this day and age? Is such a thought really possible?

Today's verse tells us that "whatever is born of God overcomes the world." If you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, then you have been born of God and are His child. To even accept Jesus indicates a position of faith on your part, for "by grace you are saved through faith" (Ephesians 2:8). But real victory does not stop here, it begins here. Faith must be grown, matured and developed by the tests and trials of life. One reason prayer is so important is that our faith is increased every time we see God answer our prayers. And we must plant His word on our hearts and in our minds, for "faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). Christians who have weak prayer lives and no time in God's Word will face the agony of defeat more than the thrill of victory. But Christians who pray, who read the Bible, and who seek the Lord with all their heart will have victory simply because of their faith. Just remember, however, that victory in Jesus is not always defined the same as victory in the world.

Does your life reflect more victories or more defeats? Where do you spend your time and what are you seeking after? Start today by asking the Lord to increase your faith. Start praying for God's help. Confess and repent from any worldly desires that steal your time and attention away from the Lord. Begin reading His Word and praying for more understanding of how to apply it in your life. At some point, we must decide which way we want to live; and then start acting on the faith given to us through Jesus. Then, and only then, will we have victory.

Reflection

As we devote our lives to serve God, He blesses the fruit of our labours with great delight and pleasure. Just as He rejoices to bless us, so also Christians should desire to serve Him. This unfathomable pleasure in serving is solely founded on the Word of God and living in accordance to it. When we follow His commands with all our heart, soul, and mind, God prospers our way over an abundance.

A Sure Foundaton

From single-dwelling homes to skyscrapers, the foundation is a key part of every structure. In order for a foundation to give the right support, its design and composition must be congruent with the type of bedrock on which it rests and environmental forces the building might be subjected to, such as earthquakes or hurricanes.

More important than a building’s foundation is that of our faith. Just as surely as buildings will encounter the forces of nature, so will our faith be assaulted by Satan. But our loving Heavenly Father has provided us with a foundation that will withstand all the fiery darts of the enemy of our soul.

See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation, the one who trusts will never be dismayed (Isaiah 28:16).

The Bible is unique, because in it we see God Himself speaking to humanity. In Isaiah 55, the prophet says, "Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near." Then God Himself speaks to humanity: "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord." In the Old Testament, God spoke to us through the prophets. In the New Testament, He spoke to us through His Son. And never did God speak so clearly as at the cross. In it, He expressed His great love for humanity. In it, He provided salvation for a lost and dying world. Now we can tell this world to seek the Lord while He may be found. Now we can tell them that through the new birth, God's thoughts can be our thoughts, and His ways can be our ways. There goes another minute. Gone forever. Go share your faith while you still have time.

Happiness Is...

Just as there is only one truth, there also is only one happiness. True happiness comes from a warm relationship with God. Abraham, Noah, Daniel and a host of other people have had this true happiness in the past.

What is true happiness? Happiness is:
* Finding the true purpose for your existence (Eph. 2:10).

* Knowing God's Will and then performing it daily in your life (Matt. 6:10; 7:21; Luke 8:21; 1 John 2:17; 1 Peter 2:15; 4:2, 6; Col. 1:10).

* Having the attitude of a servant toward others at all times as Jesus Christ, our Savior and example, did (Rom. 15:2-3; 1 Cor. 10:24; Matt. 20:26-28; 23:11).

* Having the knowledge of the truth - God's word - and being set free from all religious deception, with its satanic tentacles that grip the earth (John 8:31-32; Rev. 12:9).

* Being set free from all pagan religious traditions of men that make the worship of Jesus Christ in vain (Mark 7:7).

* Receiving answered prayer because you are constantly doing God's Will and are pleasing in His sight (1 John 3:22; John 9:31).

* Hating what is evil and loving what is good (Psalm 45:7; 97:10).

* Always having peace and not letting those who have no peace take yours (Rom. 14:19; Psalm 34:14).

* Always having faith in Christ Jesus that He will supply all your needs after you have done God's Will, and knowing that all will go right for the righteous (Is. 3:10, Matt. 6:25-33).

* Going to God and His word for the truth, instead of to books written by men, which are a great source of religious confusion.

* Keeping life simple by keeping it pure.

* Having the trusting attitude of a child toward the Lord at all times (Matt. 18:3).

* Learning who Jesus Christ really is by studying God's word, instead of believing what man says He is.

* Studying God's word for the answers to all of life's problems and questions (2 Tim. 2:15; 3:16-17).

* Wearing out your Bible for God by reading it every day and highlighting the Scriptures (Acts 17:11).

In conclusion, true happiness is knowing God's Ways and putting them into action in your daily life. This is the only way to be a friend of God. Remember always, Jesus Christ is God and we must keep only His words in order to be truly happy and never see death (John 8:51).

Vengeance is an awful and painful way to respond to those who we feel have wronged us. The LORD is our assurance of just rewards. Leave it to him. Escalating vindictiveness only leads to broken people and to broken lives. Worse yet, it leads to broken character.

Through your Spirit, Abba Father, please empower me to be patient for you to right injustices committed against me. Please help me to be more concerned about the salvation of those who may have wronged me than I am about getting even. Please give me more of a heart like your Son, Jesus, in whose name I pray. Condemnation

Satan wants you to feel condemned in your life. He wants you to feel unworthy. He wants you to be overcome with feelings of guilt and despair. He wants you to give up and say, "What’s the use. I can’t do it, it’s too hard. I can’t be the kind of person I want to be. I don’t have time to do it. I can’t be someone I’m not." When we say these things, we give in to our human nature and we are held captive by Satan to do his will (2 Tim. 2:26). Satan’s will is full of excuses so we can justify our bad behavior all day long.

God wants us to overcome Satan’s sick will in our human nature (Eph. 2:3). He wants us to replace it with His Will (Matt. 6:10). He wants us to do the same Will Jesus did and overcome just as Jesus did (John 4:34; 6:38; 16:33). In fact, one of the reasons Jesus Christ came to this earth was to show us how to overcome our old fleshly wills by practicing only the Father’s Will in our daily lives (1 John 3:7, 10). We overcome Satan’s will, by performing Christ’s deeds in our lives on a daily basis (Rev. 2:26).

God’s Will is righteousness. When we practice righteousness for God daily, we are keeping His Will (Matt. 7:21). We are to practice righteousness to please God by committing all our ways - our thoughts, words and deeds - to Him (Matt. 5:16; 2 Cor. 10:5 1 Peter 4:11; Col. 3:17). As we live to please the Spirit, we will crush and suffocate the deeds of the flesh, putting them to death in our bodies (Rom. 8:13; 16:20). We will be worshiping God with a pure heart the way He wishes to be worshiped, and we will understand why Christ died - so we could live righteously (John 4:24; Heb. 13:16; 1 Peter 2:24).

Yes, Satan wants us to keep our ways condemnable so we will keep on feeling condemned (1 John 3:21). God wants us to make our ways commendable by happily performing righteousness to please Him every day (Heb. 13:21; James 1:22, 25, 27). Let’s continually serve others from a pure heart, so we can have confidence before God every day and be ready to meet Him when He returns (Rom. 15:2-3; 1 Cor. 10:24; 1 Tim. 1:5; 1 John 3:18-22).

How To Be An Overcomer

The Bible says human nature is not good (Jer. 17:9; Gen. 8:21). Therefore, we are told to consider the old self as dead if we are to make headway as disciples of Jesus Christ (Rom. 6:11). God, in His wisdom, knew that if we were to come out of evil, we would have to have something good to do. So, He has told us in His word to overcome our evil natures by doing good (Rom. 12:21).

The Apostle Paul also admonished those who were believers to engage in good deeds because these things are good and profitable (Titus 3:8). Doing good is the way we produce fruit for God, and thus, prove ourselves to be true disciples of Jesus Christ (Titus 3:14).

John 15:8 says, "By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples." We see, then, that we glorify the Father when we bear fruit. Good works are represented by the expression "fruit." We can see this by reading Matthew 5:16 - "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." and Colossians 1:10 - "…so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God."

We could keep one of the sayings of Christ by practicing hospitality (Luke 14:13). We could have the poor, the crippled and the blind over for dinner some evening when we invite our friends. This would allow us to express God’s love in our hearts toward others and glorify our Father in heaven. Jesus Christ gave us a precious list of things we could do in Matthew 25:33-40 and in the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew chapters 5, 6 and 7.

Since Jesus Christ is making a peculiar people who are purified and zealous for good deeds, don’t you think we should be doing some good works (Titus 1:10; 2:7, 14; 3:8)? Jesus took on the form of a servant, leaving us an example, that we should be servants, too.

Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for good deeds (1 Peter 3:13)? No one, because that is what makes you a friend of God!

Is There Only One Way?

A great many people today believe there are many roads leading to salvation. They will argue, "What makes you think your way is right? My way is just as good as your way." How can people be expected to think any differently when there are thousands of religions with different views on the same subject? Is there only one way that leads to salvation? What does God’s word say?

The Lord says the gate is small and the way is narrow, and there are very few people who find it (Matt. 7:14). We must enter by that narrow door, which means we must live as Jesus gave us example to live, to find eternal life. Anyone who climbs up some other way is like a thief and a robber (John 10:1). Jesus boldly proclaims that He is the door (John 10:9).

God’s word says there is only one body, one Spirit, one Lord, one faith and one baptism (Eph. 4:4-5). Then, it would only stand to reason that there is only one way or one truth. Remember, it is impossible for God to lie and no lie is of the truth (Heb. 6:18; 1 John 2:21). Jesus Christ not only proclaimed He is the door, but also that He is the truth (John 14:6).

Jesus said everyone on earth will be judged by the words in the Bible and by their works (Rev. 20:12). Those who live a life of good works for God’s glory will be resurrected to eternal life (John 5:28-29; Matt. 5:16). Their names are recorded in the book of life and they will receive eternal life (Luke 10:20).

If everyone is going to be judged by the words of Jesus Christ that are found in the Bible, then it stands to reason that the Bible itself is truth (John 12:47-50). Jesus says everyone who keeps, does, performs or practices His sayings will never see death (John 8:51). Only those who do the Will of God will abide forever (1 John 2:17). These life-and-death Scriptures show that Jesus Christ’s words are the Will of God, because they have eternal life as the reward.

The subject of works is tragically misunderstood by many today. Evil works are Man’s works done apart from God (Jer. 17:9-10). Good works are the works Jesus Christ did to please the Father. He came to show us what to do and how to do it. We are also to do these works in order to imitate the Lord (1 Cor. 11:1; Eph. 5:1; Matt. 5:16).

The one and only way is the way Jesus Christ lived. As a result, He overcame the pulls of the world (Rev. 3:21; 5:5; John 14:30; 16:33). We, too, must overcome by performing Jesus Christ’s works and enduring to the end, so that we may be found worthy to reign with Him in His kingdom (Rev. 2:5, 26-27).

Yes, there is only one way that leads to eternal life. Now you know that way. Study God’s word daily; pray for others, as well as your own needs; and above all, be a doer of the word.

You have probably encountered a few people who hoped that they would get into Heaven because they have lived a good life. Indeed, there are many people in the world who think that all the right things they do will get them into Heaven. However, Paul knew that "There is no one righteous, not even one" (Romans 3:10).

Fortunately, God loved us so much that He provided an answer: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Furthermore, 1 Peter 3:18 tells us that "Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God."

Therefore, it is no wonder Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6).

Notice that nothing in any of those verses refers to our ability to reach Heaven. That's because it is impossible for us to reach Heaven on our own strength. Remember, "There is no one righteous, not even one." Therefore, our salvation must be based entirely on what God has done. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9).

The only requirement for getting into Heaven is believing in Jesus as your Savior and Lord. "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved" (Romans 10:9-10).

There is nothing that you can do to earn salvation. Jesus is the only way to Heaven. That's because getting into Heaven is not about what you've done; it's about what God's done.

James 5:16

They will know that I am the LORD is a familiar refrain in Ezekiel's prophecies. Here it is also a horrifying one to his people who have been rebellious, sinful, and wicked. God is holy. The people who claim him as their God had better reflect that glory and greatness. They had better magnify God's holiness. If they do not, God will do so even at their expense. God will be known as God. In a day when so many profane the name of God and use it so glibly in their reactions and frustration, this is a sobering reminder that even the name of God is holy. He will show his greatness and holiness.

Grace and freedom are not a license to sin (Jude 4). In fact, sin enslaves us; sin is addictive (John 8:34). As those for whom the old person of sin has died and been buried with Jesus in baptism, we are not to let sin reign over us or become our master because we have been liberated by grace (Rom. 6:1-14). So let's seek the power of the Holy Spirit to cleanse us (Heb. 9:14) and powerfully liberate us from sin (Rom. 8:10-15). Let's use our freedom to bless and build others up. Let's use our freedom to offer our hearts and lives to the work of God!

We will pursue it with passion. This will be our consuming effort until we make it our own, or better yet, find it our home!

Forgive me, dear God, for letting my passion for your Kingdom and your character get pushed to the side. Awaken me each morning with a sense of passion for your work and your will for that day. Father, I want to be a passionate seeker; please make me restless for your Kingdom as my home. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Wrestling With God

There are times in life when we are faced with situations that seem dark; Situations that cause us to question our faith in the promises that we have received from God’s Word. Sometimes we struggle with circumstances in the world that cause us to be distracted away from God as we try to battle and win by our own efforts. Even struggles with our own flesh can become a battle that causes us to focus more on our internal war than on God. But our struggle should not be with these things for the battle is the Lord’s. Our struggle should be focused on holding on to God and His Word no matter how dark, and no matter how hopeless, the situation seems. Clinging to God with all perseverance is a part of loving Him.

A Broken Promise

We’ve all made promises that we’ve broken. When that happens, we diminish ourselves as persons and lose the confidence of others. Sometimes it can lead to great bitterness and sorrow.

A few hours before Judas betrayed him, Jesus told his disciples that they would soon all “fall away.” He would be arrested and crucified, he said, and all of them would forsake him.

Peter vigorously disagreed: “Even if all the others fall away, I will not. I will never disown you.”

But Jesus told him that before a rooster crowed twice the next morning, Peter would deny Jesus three times. And that’s what happened. Three times Peter broke the vow he’d made with so much gusto—and when he heard the rooster crow, Peter remembered Jesus’ words, and he broke down and wept.

The story of Peter’s broken promise does not end there, however, because Jesus is the Savior who forgives promise breakers when they repent and return to him. After his resurrection Jesus restored Peter to the circle of his disciples, and Peter lived on to serve the Lord and spread the gospel. For the rest of his life, he thanked God for his forgiving and restoring grace.

A Firm Foundation

“The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone.”
Mark 12:10

In ancient times a capstone was the most important stone of a great building. From Psalm 118:22, the passage Jesus quoted in our reading, we find that this term literally means “head of the corner,” so it could also refer to a cornerstone.

A cornerstone was essential for laying a firm foundation. This stone was very large and was set carefully in place at the beginning of a construction project. All other stones were set in line with the cornerstone. Everything was built around it and depended on it.

In God’s plan of salvation, Jesus himself is the cornerstone (see Ephesians 2:20), and everything is built around him. Though his enemies rejected him, he remains the pivotal center of God’s saving work.

Jesus was saying that although his enemies would kill him, they could not defeat him—and that is precisely what happened. Jesus’ enemies sentenced him to death on a cross, but three days later he rose triumphantly from the dead. He was rejected on our behalf so that all who believe in him as Lord may be accepted by God and forgiven of their sins.

Let’s ask ourselves: Is Jesus our personal cornerstone? Are all the things we do, the values we hold, and the goals we pursue centered in him? If not, we’d better look out, because we’re building our lives the wrong way!

Prayer:
Lord, you bore the punishment of our sin on the cross, and you rose victorious from the grave. Guide us to honor you as our cornerstone, the center of our lives. Amen.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

It is a good work to succour and help a good minister in trouble. The nature of true Christian sympathy, is not only to feel concern for our friends in their troubles, but to do what we can to help them. The apostle was often in bonds, imprisonments, and necessities; but in all, he learned to be content, to bring his mind to his condition, and make the best of it. Pride, unbelief, vain hankering after something we have not got, and fickle disrelish of present things, make men discontented even under favourable circumstances. Let us pray for patient submission and hope when we are abased; for humility and a heavenly mind when exalted. It is a special grace to have an equal temper of mind always. And in a low state not to lose our comfort in God, nor distrust his providence, nor take any wrong course for our own supply. In a prosperous condition not to be proud, or secure, or worldly. This is a harder lesson than the other; for the temptations of fulness and prosperity are more than those of affliction and want. The apostle had no design to urge them to give more, but to encourage such kindness as will meet a glorious reward hereafter. Through Christ we have grace to do what is good, and through him we must expect the reward; and as we have all things by him, let us do all things for him, and to his glory.

LACK NOTHING

The rich young man had a lot going for him. He lived a clean life, worshiped God, and obeyed the Word of God. We’d probably call him a “spiritual” person. Since he was concerned about life after death, he asked Jesus, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”

The answer Jesus gave disappointed him. Maybe he had expected Jesus to give him a secret rule to keep or a special pilgrimage to take so he could be assured of a happy life forever. But Jesus pressed deep into the heart of God’s law: “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Hearing this, the man’s face fell in disappointment. He was very wealthy, and that meant everything to him. Jesus was offering him the treasures of the kingdom of God, something far greater than earthly riches. But the sacrifice of giving his money away and taking the risk of following Jesus was more than the young man was ready to accept. So he turned away.

To follow Jesus means to make him the center of our lives, set everything else aside, and go where he leads. Sounds risky? The truth is that when we follow him, we find that we lack nothing. Each day is a new and wonderful challenge, and there’s a joy down deep within us that all the money in the world can’t buy.

Prayer:
Thank you, Lord, for giving yourself for us on the cross. Take over our lives, and make us love nothing more than to grow in relationship with you. In your name, Amen.

When Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt I’m sure several million people were wondering, “How am I going to be fed? How am I going to survive in this wilderness?” Imagine the logistical nightmare. An incalculable quantity of food and water were needed to survive in the desert. Where would it come from? Yet, in this seemingly impossible situation, God provided!

He provided Manna from heaven. When the people first saw the Manna on the ground, they wondered in amazement saying to each other, “What is this?”, which is exactly what “Manna” means in Hebrew – “What is it?” They were receiving the food of angels, [Psalm 78:24-25] which sustained them the entire time in the desert.

But we know what happened as time passed…the people got used to this miraculous provision, began to take it for granted, and even be bored with it, and, of course…the wonder of God’s supernatural provision evaporated. Israel lost sight of the miracle that God was doing in their lives each and every day.

Each and every day is a miracle from God. Each day of our lives we walk through a world filled with the wonders and glory of the Lord. But we, too, can become dull and lose the wonder of all that He has done and provided for us, even our very salvation. We need to awaken to the daily miracles of life, and to the never ending opportunities the Lord is opening, to pour His love into us, and through us. As we do, may we always be saying to ourselves, “Wow – what amazing love is this that’s been given to me!”

That You May Know

1 John 5:13 NIV: I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Within a single statement, John clarifies to us his purpose for writing his letter-"that you may know." I recently asked a woman if she was going to heaven. She replied, "I hope so." I asked her how she could go on in such uncertainty regarding her eternal life. She wasn´t sure what to say, but then asked me if I was going to heaven. I simply said, "Yes." She asked, "How do you know?" God wants us to know that we have eternal life. He has told us so in His Word. For those who believe in the name of the Son of God, there is no reason to walk in uncertainty any longer.

If Jesus Came to Your House

If Jesus came to your house to spend a day or two -
If He came unexpectedly, I wonder what you'd do.
Oh, I know you'd give your nicest room to such an honored Guest,
And all the food you'd serve to Him would be the very best,
And you would keep assuring Him you're glad to have him there -
That serving Him in your own home is joy beyond compare.

But when you saw Him coming, would you meet Him at the door
With arms outstretched in welcome to your heavenly Visitor?
Or would you have to change your clothes before you let Him in?
Or hide some magazines and put the Bible where they'd been?
Would you turn off the radio and hope He hadn't heard?
And wish you hadn't uttered that last, loud, hasty word?

Would you hide your worldly music and put some hymn books out?
Could you let Jesus walk right in, or would you rush about?
And I wonder - if the Savior spent a day or two with you,
Would you go right on doing the things you always do?
Would you go right on saying the things you always say?
Would life for you continue as it does from day to day?

Would your family conversation keep up it's usual pace?
And would you find it hard each meal to say a table grace?
Would you sing the songs you always sing, and read the books you read,
And let Him know the things on which your mind and spirit feed?
Would you take Jesus with you everywhere you'd planned to go?
Or would you, maybe, change your plans for just a day or so?

Would you be glad to have Him meet your very closest friends?
Or would you hope they'd stay away until His visit ends?
Would you be glad to have Him stay forever on and on?
Or would you sigh with great relief when He at last was gone?
It might be interesting to know the things that you would do
If Jesus Christ in person came to spend some time with you.

Getting Ready

2 Corinthians 4:16-18: Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

It is so easy to look into the mirror and be unhappy with the unkind tricks time plays on our faces and bodies. Living in a world where outward appearance seems so important to so many is something that can sometimes blind us to what is real and lasting. Many of us spend 20 to 30 minutes a day putting on our faces, as it were-and to what end? But consider what equal time invested in God´s Word can do for our spirits. Mirror time in the morning may get us ready for school or work; but time in the Word-now that will get us ready for eternity.

The Path of Righteousness

Psalm 23:3 NKJV

It was, at once, history’s most beautiful and most horrible moment. Jesus stood in the tribunal of heaven. Sweeping a hand over all creation, he pleaded, “Punish me for their mistakes. See the murderer? Give me his penalty. The adulteress? I’ll take her shame. The bigot, the liar, the thief? Do to me what you would do to them. Treat me as you would a sinner.”

And God did. “For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.” (I Pet. 3:18 NIV)…

The path of righteousness is a narrow, winding trail up a steep hill. At the top of the hill is a cross. At the base of the cross are bags. Countless bags full of innumerable sins. Calvary is the compost pile for guilt. Would you like to leave yours there as well?

Our Greatest Rewards

Psalm 37:4 NIV: Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Jesus told us that "whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for [Jesus´] sake shall find it" (Matthew 16:25). Our greatest rewards will come when we do not seek them. As we seek to "lose" our lives, we open ourselves up to be the instruments of God´s purpose, to accomplish His will on earth. Living this way will bring us great rewards, and that is because we do not seek rewards. We do not seek to store up treasures in heaven and we do not do our righteous acts so that God will reward us--we simply do them because--and we require nothing in return. If our only reason to live the Christian life is to gain better reward then we have missed the point. Following Christ means sacrifice of our wants and giving up of personal desires so that God´s greater good will prevail.

The Rock

Psalm 18:46 NIV: The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior!

I fondly remember a camping trip that my family and my friend´s family went on shortly after my friend had surrendered her life to Christ. We had been walking along a road until she came across a large rock. I will never forget the way she looked, standing up on that rock, singing praises to God. Since that time, when I ask her how she´s doing, I sometimes ask her if she´s "standing on the Rock." There is nothing on earth like standing on the Rock. As our hearts are focused on Jesus, and overflow with His joy, we cannot help but erupt with offerings of praise to Him. For some of us, it has been too long since we have (at least within our hearts), stood on the Rock of Christ and praised Him wholeheartedly. How truly wonderful that we do not have to wait another day, or even for a camping trip. We can ask Jesus to lift us up today, plant our feet on the Rock, and fill our hearts with His praise-bringing joy once more.

Weary and Burdened

Matthew 11:28 NIV: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

"It doesn´t matter any more," I barely uttered aloud, "None of it matters." My wife asked me what I was talking about. "All the things that were bothering me; they just don´t matter anymore," I replied. This took place shortly after I turned over my life to Jesus. I had encountered Him. I had looked into His face. And everything else faded in comparison. Since that time, I have had my share of setbacks--times when I struggle and let things "matter" in such a way that I become burdened by the weight of my troubles. All the while, Jesus is still there, waiting for me to turn to Him and look into His face--waiting to again lift the burdens. And when I turn to Him, I am again awestruck by the extraordinary way that all those things that seem to matter, simply fade in comparison to Him. Are you weary and burdened? Go to Jesus and do not leave His presence until you feel His calming rest assurance that all is well--that He is right there with you--and He will manage for you all the things that truly matter.

Don't Be Shaken

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

When we first moved to Israel we experienced a thundering earthquake that measured 5.2 on the Richter scale. I was in my Hebrew class downtown, and my wife and newborn were in our Jerusalem apartment. I don’t know if any of you have ever experienced an earthquake, but it can be very scary. My wife told me about her experience.

She was sitting in our bedroom with the baby in her arms, when out of nowhere came a sudden loud roaring sound, followed by a shaking of all four walls, and all the contents within banging against them for what seemed like an eternity.

So many things go through your mind when you’re in the midst of a life-threatening experience like that. Rivka said that as everything was shaking, she began to fear what could happen next. But in the midst of it all, Riv looked down at Elianna in her arms. Would you believe, she was perfectly content — happy, smiling, even drifting off to sleep as the earth shook all around her.

Each of us can take a lesson from Elianna. Even in the midst of craziness, chaos, distress, crises beyond our control, we as believers must rest, trusting that we’re safe in the loving arms of the Father.

Is your world being shaken right now? Know that God is holding you today. No matter what you’re facing, you can trust Him fully to cover you and protect you. Relax in His sheltering arms!

Testing for Obedience

Test me, O LORD, and try me, examine my heart and my mind" (Ps. 26:2).

Throughout the Old Testament, we see many situations in which God tests His people in order to determine if they will follow Him or follow the systems of this world.

The nation of Israel was tested many times during the 40-year sojourn in the wilderness: "Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands" (Deut. 8:2).

You might ask, "Why does God need to test us? Doesn't He know everything, including what we would do in every situation?" Yes, God knows - but we don't know ourselves! God doesn't test us in order to find out something He doesn't already know. He tests us so that we can learn about ourselves and His love, power and faithfulness.

In Genesis 22, God tested Abraham by commanding him to sacrifice his son Isaac on a mountain in the land of Moriah. Isaac was Abraham's only son by his wife Sarah - the son God had promised to Abraham. By demanding that Isaac be sacrificed, God seemed to be nullifying His covenant of making a great nation of Abraham. How could God's promise be fulfilled if Isaac was dead?

God tested Abraham to reveal whether or not Abraham truly trusted His promise. Yes, God knew what Abraham would do, but He wanted Abraham to know as well. So God put Abraham to the test, and Abraham passed. As Abraham raised the knife to sacrifice his own son, God stopped him and provided a sacrificial ram instead.

Every test involves obedience in one way or another. When God tests us, He reveals the true state of our hearts. Are we obedient to His will, or are we self-willed? We might think we know the answer, but we would never truly know unless we were tested.

Transformation

2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Coming into the transforming presence of God is something that will open our eyes to a great many things. Drawing near to Him will guarantee that we will begin to rethink the way we think, and question the way we have always considered things to be. We progress forward toward Him until we face areas we may be unwilling to give up, or that we are not wanting to consider changing. It´s then that we shelter our eyes from His light as He reveals truth that we choose not to see. The painful reality is most painful to our flesh. Our flesh chooses to cling to that which is loved in the flesh--those things that are of this earth which bring to us a sense of security and comfort. Our flesh is unwilling to part with such things or even to consider doing so. It is not until we can willingly deny ourselves and selfish nature, that we will move forward toward God. It is not until we are willing to abandon all we have ever treasured, believed or thought we knew, that we will truly "throw off everything that hinders" so that we can fully come into the transforming presence of our Lord.

Thoughts for Today

Do you sometimes find it difficult to manage your thoughts, attitudes, behaviors or emotions? Are you continuing in a destructive habit even though you know you are hurting yourself and those you love?

If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, you are not alone. Many of us have operated in a self-destruct mode at some time in our lives. Perhaps you have determined to do right, to change. For a while, things might be better and then you find yourself right back where you started.

Consider this…

Remember two things: First, you can't make this kind of change by yourself. Second, that's OK because you don't have to do it by yourself. God is standing by to help you. He is inviting you to turn your problem over to him. He wants you to know this is not a person-size problemâ€”it is a God-size problem. He loves you and he wants to help you.

The beginning steps to overcoming any destructive pattern in your life are to admit you have the problem, admit you cannot correct the problem by yourself, tell God you are sorry for what you have been doing and that you truly want to change. And then trust him to help you.

Things won't change overnight, but you will be moving in the right direction. And God will be with you throughout the process. With him, all things are possible (Philippians 4:13).

Prayer

Father, sometimes I feel so alone and helpless. Please bring this scripture to my mind at those times. Help me remember that you are always with me and that with you, all things are possible. In Jesus' name …
